Yet only 12% of respondents to this records management study from Iron Mountain and the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) feel confident that they store only what they need to store. Respondents estimated that only 42% of the information that businesses store electronically is useful.
Close to 60% of the information that businesses are storing, therefore, is ROT.
ROT, or redundant, obsolete and trivial content, is clogging up enterprise storage systems everywhere. Most businesses agree that they simply cannot hold on to all of it all it. The superficial attraction behind the keep-it-all-in-case cultures that many seem to adopt means that the money spent by IT to keep the infrastructure running considerably outweighs the money available for new projects and investments.
It's time for businesses to drop the ROT.
