Iron Mountain Digital reveals seven woes of the email world

~ White Paper sets out critical areas for IT directors
to consider for email continuity ~

Research from Iron Mountain Digital has set out the seven major email problems facing IT directors.

The technology arm of Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) has launched its findings in a new White Paper, The Email Management Crisis, which sets out the problems IT managers have to be able to respond to, or face hefty criticism as workforce productivity grinds to a halt.

Email continues to grow in importance for business communication with users classifying 54% of emails received as important or critical. Over 70 per cent of users confess to sending and storing corporate information such as sales proposals, marketing plans and contracts in their email folders. Iron Mountain Digital has identified the seven woes of the email world as:

  1. Email disaster recovery
  2. Managing complex email retention policies
  3. Complying with e-discovery requests
  4. Controlling exchange data store growth
  5. Defusing the PST time bomb
  6. Managing the security admin burden
  7. Managing wireless devices

The Paper examines the requirements of an effective email archive system that can enable IT directors to respond to the seven issues. Strategies including storage management, self-serve restore and outage protection are set out in detail as practical options for IT directors to put into practice.

“The email management crisis is impacting organisations of all sizes. Users are becoming increasingly reliant upon email, not just for communication, but for storage of critical information too,” said Nick Cater, head of northern Europe, Iron Mountain Digital. “If an email outage occurs, it can not only bring productivity to a halt, but valuable corporate data can be lost forever.”

“Ultimately CIOs and CEOs are responsible for their organisation’s compliance, but if IT cannot provide a continuous audit trail, jobs could be on the line,” continued Cater. “The email mountain will continue to grow, and it’s up to organisations to put effective management structure in place to ensure they can continue to scale it, no matter how high it gets.”
