Relocation triggers data protection rethink for Hunter Boot
~Iron Mountain Digital service replaces on-site backup~
February 6, 2009 - Hunter Boot Ltd has opted for an online, automated backup and recovery solution to ensure continuous backup of crucial company information across its three sites in Edinburgh, London and New York.
The manufacturer and supplier of Wellington boots and accessories by Royal appointment has selected Iron Mountain Digital’s LiveVault® Server Backup and Recovery service. Providing simple point and click recovery, the solution operates in the background, running incremental backups of the file server every 15 minutes to back up only those files that have been modified.
Planning to move the company’s headquarters from Dumfries to Edinburgh, a complete evaluation of the existing IT environment was carried out in June 2008. This led to Hunter Boot more than doubling its existing infrastructure to seven servers. A decision was taken to replace the existing solution, which did not address the demands of the current environment.
“We did initially consider a number of proposed solutions based on Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) technology. However these proved too cost prohibitive as we would have to build the infrastructure from the bottom up,” said Sandy MacDonald, IT Manager at Hunter Boot Ltd. “We settled on the online backup approach as the process was automated and required no action on our part. Iron Mountain Digital stood out in particular as we could breakdown the cost per gigabyte, per month. This helped in building a strong business case for the operations and finance directors to get the cost signed off.”
LiveVault was initially trialed over one month to provide proof of concept for compatibility with the company’s Linux-based operating systems. Supporting 45 users, the solution went live globally in December 2008.
